Young Women Activity Idea: Painting The Book of Mormon

Young Women Activity Idea: Painting The Book of Mormon

In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, finding meaningful activities that deepen our connection with our faith can be a true blessing. Whether you're a young woman, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or simply someone seeking a creative outlet tied to your spiritual journey, painting the Book of Mormon can be a beautiful and fulfilling experience. Today, I want to share with you a step-by-step guide on how to create your own painted Book of Mormon, inspired by a beloved young woman activity we recently had in our ward.

Supplies You'll Need

Before we dive into the process, let's gather the necessary supplies to bring this activity to life. You will need:

Hard Cover Book of Mormon
Masking Tape
Printer and Paper
Acrylic Paints
Paint Brushes
Acrylic Paint Pens (optional, but recommended)
White Carbon Transfer Paper
Wood Dowels or Stylus
Modge Podge
Sponge brush

Step 1: Prepare the Template or Plan Your Design

You first need to plan your design. You can find inspiration online or come up with your own idea. Or you can purchase and use templates to save yourself the effort of doing a freehand design. Firstly, print the template you have chosen, ensuring you do not select "scale to fit." It's important to maintain a print scale proportion of 100%. Once printed, carefully cut out the template you want to use for your Book of Mormon cover.

Step 2: Secure the Template

Take your chosen template and tape it onto the binding part of the Book of Mormon using masking tape. This will ensure that it stays in place while you work on transferring the design.

Step 3: The Art of Transfer

Now, let's bring the template design to the cover of the Book of Mormon. Place a sheet of white Carbon transfer paper between the template and the book cover, making sure it is secure. You can even fold the carbon paper around the back of the book to help it stay in place.

Using a wood dowel or stylus, carefully trace along the lines of the template. As you do so, the lines will transfer in a white color onto the Book of Mormon cover, acting as a guide for your painting.

Step 4: Express Your Creativity

This is the moment where your creativity can truly shine. Select your desired acrylic paints and paint brushes, and begin filling in the design. You can add depth and detail with the acrylic paint pens if you'd like. Remember, this is your personal interpretation of the beautiful themes within the Book of Mormon, so let your heart guide your paintbrush.

Step 5: Patience and Perseverance

Once you've completed your masterpiece, allow the Book of Mormon to dry completely. This will ensure that your hard work is preserved for years to come.

Step 6: Protecting your Creation

Finally, to ensure the longevity of your painted Book of Mormon, apply a very thin layer of Modge Podge using a sponge brush. This protective coat will keep your artwork safe and secure, allowing it to withstand the test of time.

When the young women in our ward embarked on this creative journey, they found joy, inspiration, and a strengthened connection to the sacred teachings found within the Book of Mormon. This activity can easily be adapted as a Relief Society, youth, or family activity to enhance your Come Follow Me studies in 2024. Remember, this painting endeavor is not just about creating a visually stunning book cover. It's about immersing yourself in the scriptures, discovering new avenues of self-expression, and finding solace and encouragement through the spiritual power of art.

So, my dear friends, I invite you to embark on your own creative journey with painting the Book of Mormon. Let your brush strokes reflect the beauty of the gospel principles that resonate in your heart. And may this activity not only add color to your bookshelf but also deepen your connection to the divinely inspired words within.
