'Nailed It' - A Hilarious Baking Challenge for a Young Women Activity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
During a planning session with the youth a young woman talked about a TV show called 'Nailed It'. Inspired by this comedic baking competition, we decided to adapt the concept and create a memorable activity for our youth group. This blog post outlines the planning, preparation, and execution of this delightful event, hoping to inspire other young women leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Preparation:
A week before the activity, we organized a group outing to the store to purchase the necessary ingredients. We aimed to make the experience as seamless as possible, so we bought boxed cake mixes in advance and divided them out and assigned different leaders and girls to bake cakes, rice crispy treats, and cupcakes then bring them for the activity. This allowed the participants to focus on the decorating aspect during the actual activity. Here's a list of ingredients we obtained:
Boxed Cake Mixes
Powdered Sugar for Frosting
Food Coloring
Graham Crackers
Marshmallows
Rice Krispy Cereal (or any off-brand alternative)
Assorted candies such as licorice, suckers, and other creative options suggested by the youth.
Activity Execution:
During the activity, we divided the participants into five groups, ensuring at least one leader was present at each table. Additional leaders were selected as "judges" to oversee the event. To inject a spiritual element, we assigned each table a scripture from the Book of Mormon that depicted a well-known account. For example, our table received the scripture where Lehi and his family wake up in the wilderness and find the Liahona in front of their tent.
Each team had a time limit of about 45 to 60 minutes to work their magic. Based on their assigned scripture, they were free to choose what elements of the story they wanted to portray through their cake decoration. The participants could either recreate the entire scene or focus on a specific aspect such as the Liahona.
The Result:
The entire activity was a roaring success, filled with laughter, creativity, and camaraderie. Everyone had a fantastic time, and the cakes, although not perfect, turned out to be full of personality and charm. The youth not only enjoyed the baking challenge but also deepened their understanding of the assigned scripture through artistic expression.
Conclusion:
If you're looking for a memorable and entertaining activity for the young women in your LDS ward, we highly recommend adapting the 'Nailed It' baking show to suit your needs. It fosters teamwork, creativity, and spiritual reflection, making it a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved. We encourage you to try it out and share your thoughts on how it goes.
